"새는 알을 깨고 나온다. 알은 세계이다." 헤르만 헤세의 문장에서 시작된 작업은 깨치고 날아간 새보다 그 자리에 남아버린 '껍질'에 오랫동안 머물렀다. 나에게 그 껍질은 어른이 되기 위해 통과해야 했던 첫 번째 세계 바로 동심의 흔적이다. 어린 시절의 우리는 선명하고 무해한 세계 속에서 살아간다. 알록달록한 색채, 작은 핀 하나에 세상을 다 얻은 듯했던 기쁨, 비밀스러운 상상들이 하나의 세계를 이루어 우리를 감싸고 있다. 그러나 시간이 흐르며 우리는 자라나고 당연하다는 듯 그 울타리를 깨트리며 밖으로 흘러나온다. 세상은 이를 ‘성장’이라 부르며 지나온 것들을 뒤로하라고 말하지만 벗어던진 동심은 결코 사라지지 않는다고 믿는다. 그것은 완전히 분리될 수 없는 ‘허물’이 되어, 현재의 우리 몸과 마음 한구석에 가만히 겹쳐진 채 남아 있다. 귀엽고도 기묘하게 남아있는 이 여러 겹의 허물들은 내가 한때 어떤 미학을 사랑했고 어떤 무구함 속에서 숨 쉬었는지를 증명하는 초상이다. "The bird fights its way out of the egg. The egg is the world." Starting from Hermann Hesse’s words, my gaze lingered not on the bird that broke free and flew away, but on the shell left behind in its place. To me, that shell represents the trace of childhood—the very first world we had to pass through to become adults. In our childhood, we lived within a vivid and harmless world. Bright, vibrant colors, the joy of feeling like we possessed the entire world with just a tiny hairpin, and secretive imaginations formed a sanctuary around us. Yet as time passed and we grew, we naturally broke through that boundary and flowed outward into the world beyond. Society calls this 'growth' and urges us to leave what was behind, but I believe that discarded childhood never truly disappears. It becomes an inseparable 'skin'—a delicate layer that quietly remains overlapped within a corner of our present mind and body. These multiple layers of skin, lingering in a way both cute and grotesque, serve as a portrait proving what kind of aesthetic I once cherished and what innocence I breathed within.
